“When Quitting is not an Option” is the title of the book and a documentary that will be released on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 as part of this year’s Winnipeg Real to Reel Film Festival.
It goes without saying: I do admire Arvid’s achievements, his determination, his discipline and endurance when it comes to his cycling abilities; to finish a race, to push beyond what I and many of us think is possible.
However, what really gets under my skin is his obedience to God’s call. In order to obey God Arvid and his wife Ruth had to make some tough decision regarding their life style and their future. Arvid says, “It was radical and counter-cultural, and it was extremely difficult. When God called us to live this life, He didn’t promise it would be comfortable.” “Moving forward, pushing more and more into what God had called us to do, would take a level of commitment that stretched beyond anything I had imagined.”
Not everyone is called to use extreme cycling for God’s Kingdom (and I sure am glad God didn’t call me to do it – big smile here!) But here are questions I’ve been asking myself while reading this book:
- Where does God want me to step out of my comfort zone and follow Him, obey Him with radical surrender?
- Would I be willing to give up everything and follow Him?
- What is holding me back? What area of my life, what things in my life do I keep holding on to?
In the devotional “Sparkling Gems from the Greek” Rick Renner talks about this same topic: Obedience to God’s prompting. He writes, “The primary reason we don’t obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit is that we are afraid of what may or may not happen if we step out in faith to do what He has asked us to do. But we need to learn to trust the Holy Spirit. He will never lead us to do something that is wrong or harmful. He will never fail us or let us down… Your own actions, fears, insecurities and disobedience to the call of the Holy Spirit can thwart the plan of God for your life!”
In his book Arvid Loewen describes his process of coming to a point where it was a decision about all or nothing. If it were an easy road, we would not need God’s help. But when He places a call on our lives and asks us to obedient, God makes sure He is part of our story.
Here is what Arvid believes: “Never, ever dismiss the difference we can make if we step out of our comfort zones.”
What is God asking you to do? What are you afraid of?
