When the Past Wants me Back

Last week I wrote about how I stumbled across some documents from my past. And I guess seeing those papers triggered all kinds of memories. And looking back so many things make totally sense now, and I wonder why I didn’t see that then? And then others, I just shake my head and wonder how could I have been so stupid and blind not to see…

And these ones come up a lot more powerful than all the positive memories. It’s the negative side of my past that sometimes wants me back. It wants to occupy my mind, it wants to influence my present…

BUT then I’m studying the book of Ephesians with the Good Morning Girls. And some of this week’s verses helped me to stop my past get into my present (and my future):

“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God – truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:21-24 New Living Translation

I’m very grateful for God’s timing on these verses. It was so important for me to hear this: “Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.” I have to make a choice, a deliberate choice not to go back, not to allow my mind and thoughts to be occupied by something that wants me destroyed, wants me in the pit. And yes, my thoughts also influence my attitude. Have you ever noticed that?

The best part is, I don’t have to do this on my own. The Holy Spirit is there to help. I just have to be willing, and allow the Spirit to do his work.

“So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.
But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”
Romans 8:5 NLT
